oooops it's /proc/42/environ not env.

a bunch of people are telling me "wow how did i not know about /proc this is so cool". literally my favorite kind of conversation to have.
-
Have you looked at /proc on
#illumos? It's different, been around longer (from v8 Research UNIX), and enables the proc(1) tools! -
If you’re curious about illumos /proc, I wrote a lobste.rs comment with some sign posts a while ago:https://lobste.rs/s/zs7nfy/understanding_proc/comments/nytadx#c_nytadx …

@b0rk@SwiftOnSecurity how did I not know these wonders of /proc 'til now?! Are you a witch, wielding potent magic of awesome knowledge? -
yes basically. see http://jvns.ca/zines for more
-
I think Julia prefers the term 'wizard'

And note that /proc/XXX/fd is pure magic. Opening one of those files is like getting a dup'd filehandle from the process itself!
-
Which means you can recover deleted files, access pipes, memfds and anonymous sockets. :D
-
yeah it's the best
-
I cannot describe in words how much dodgy shit I've done with /proc. Thank you GNU/Linux for being so hackable. :D
-
With mastery of /proc , /sys , and netlink sockets, you can legitimately sign your emails, "Scary Motherf**ker"
-
I seriously considered doing this for a minute. But I think my reputation already proceeds me in this respect.
-
[ My coworkers no longer allow me to ssh into their machines, because I've killed machines by messing with /sys. ]

"Sure, I've got a box you can borrow. Oh, but Aleksa was on it though... no? Sorry man."
