it's been awhile since I looked at code at this level... what happens to the file handle if the prog terminates abnormally

the same thing that happens when a program exits that has a deleted file open (i believe the inode gets deleted?)

do you know if there is a good way to use this in shell scripts? too often do i find myself creating a temp file or named pipe and immediately deleting it to only hold on to the handle
-
i don't know but maybe process substitution would also do what you want?https://superuser.com/questions/1059781/what-exactly-is-in-bash-and-in-zsh …

oh dang I didn't know that! It's really cool that that's both more _useful_ (cleaning up after itself) _and_ more secure (no one else can read it) _and_ less bug prone (no accidental filename collision) not often things that go together!

and here i was gonna ask: Is this a Good Thing™??! but, wow, cool

O_TMPFILE is very useful indeed. Not every Linux extension is useful outside Linux, but I hope this one catches on in other POSIX systems, too. (It's less useful when you can't get the temporary file name from /proc/$PID/fd to hardlink, though.)
