Oh yeh, forgot the discussion was about Steve Salerno. Ended-up focusing on Brads story. Yeh, Steve Salerno had a platform so his rhetoric is pretty destructive. Going to read the wiki you sent me, haven't heard of 'state of affairs' before.

It's not about anything. Just philosophy. Only read if you're bothered.

Okay, so the state of affair is a like a the way the 'actual world' must be in order for a proposition to be true?

It's like if I say: All trees are mammals. An oak is a tree. Therefore, an oak is a mammal. It's not a logical fallacy, it's just it doesn't obtain in this universe.

Yeh, so in this case the Prof is making a statement that isn't a logical fallacy but essentially is not true in this universe.

This is a popular way many people build their arguments on this platform. It’s a house of cards once you find the erroneous assumption, but often they will switch the focus of the convo once you start addressing the weak spot. Once you know to look for it you see it everywhere.

Especially white supremacists, yup! Arguing with them is like driving/walking home in my mind. I am the driver — they are the weather/whatever. I always make it home (= get to make my coherent point), the weather is always chaos (= they always just say random trash).

There is one particular IDW-type that I engage with who always ignores my points that get at the erroneous assumptions in his arguments & then quickly jumps to being personally insulting. By looking at what he ignores & when he gets insulting, I know I’ve hit the mark.

It's weird we don't really live in the Mesopotamia or Kingdom of Kush. It would be pretty different then. But just doesn't hold much weight within our century. And generally an individual racist incident is very different from a systematic one.
