I know this is scary, but doing a PhD while on a FB salary = the dream. It’s only a few PhDs. Not everyone wants to be a career academic, why not just see this plays out and give people the option? ___ Personally, we should be giving students the choice.https://twitter.com/mikarv/status/1364370161822818304 …

Some PhD sectors pay highly enhanced stipends, distributed by a uni (eg pharma). It doesn’t mean the pharma company can limit research by in effect making continual funding conditional on not speaking out against them. What’s happening here isn’t necessary for better funding.

swiss uni PhDs enjoy this...plus, obviously, EPFL/ETH are also quite good institutions anyhow:)

UK also the outlier of course in Europe where most scientific hard hitters incl EPFL/ETH employ PhD researchers at the university rather than provide them student status grants.

The U.K. has a rather weird relationship with it’s students — I’m generally not a fan of it. Do you know if the Facebook PhD pays market rates? (If anything I think that could be a win).

Current stipend for many PhD students is £16,000. Facebook entering the market could likely force that to increase and provide students with stronger industries skills.
