How do people get (external) nominations for awards? I feel really weird about imposing on people (esp ones I don't know very well) to do work so that I can try to win a prize.

Yeah, you just have to do it. It's painful, but unavoidable.

One tip: even though people sometimes say this is bad practice, if you're really worried about the imposition, offer to give them a draft letter.

Yes. But if they say yes to the offer feel free to think badly of them.

Are you joking or serious?

Serious. I always write award letters myself. And i think everyone else who cares. Incidentally, I got zero awards in my life afaik but many people I wrote for got prestigious awards.

In my letter for your nomination (although of not much value to you), I’ll certainly mention this fact
Also, let me give you your first award: An [Arguably] Decent Scientist!
It comes with a lifetime of respect from us

Future Distinguished Emeritus Prof Pradeep Reddy 😎 @Raamana_How about we replace all the myriad Young Investigator, Early Career, Mid Career, Late Career, and Super Old Fart awards with a single A DECENT SCIENTIST award? One can only get it once in life and they must make space for everyone else afterwards. Just a thought.#phdchatPokaż ten wątek2 odpowiedzi 0 podanych dalej 1 polubiony -

I think most people who care and who write the kinds of letters that matter for a prize write them themselves. Konrad is fantastic but he's not that special in this respect

The award was not for that fact alone! Konrad is one of the few people here who always debated with me (frankly nobody in the larger scheme of things) in depth ALWAYS in good faith on diverse topics over the years. it takes a admirable commitment to science to maintain that IMHO

Can we just write Konrads award letter using GPT-3.
Tbh, after joining Twitter, I’ve come a huge Brad and Konrad fan.
