You don’t give employees the offer of more money for the waiver of being able to join a union. Similarly, it’s unfair to tie young researchers’ hands before they start just because they want (or need!) more funding. You can fund more but maintain basic standards and ethics.
I think this is idealistic, I don’t see it happening. Universities in general have pretty appalling reputation for abuse, also academic careers are pushed by an attempt to publish in prestigious journals.

But it already happens in other sectors, such as pharmaceuticals. My point is that universities should be in a position of negotiating power with firms to have funding + independence, but roll over — in part bc the faculty also employed at them have blurred the lines so much!

Yup. This is a valid point. I’m actually unsure which side is better for students. I’ve slowly come to the opinion private companies are disruptive and force change. While I’ve seen universities remain stagnant for decades.
