Thank you! Yes, that's one of the resources we are thinking of. Especially given UCL's history of eugenics, we need to do a better job at educating our students around ethics, past and present.

For students.

What’s the objective of the course? What do you want students to learn? Angela Saini has done a lot of work on the history of scientific racism. Then there’s a lot of recent work in misuse of AI.

Not fully shaped thoughts here, which is partly why I'm looking for examples :-) In any case, we want our students to be aware of dangers of (a) analyses with unethical aims (b) biased data (c) data privacy. Plenty of examples throughout the history of the discipline!

Cool. So I think a strong example is the history of scientific racism and how data can be used to push extreme ideologies. 1960s AID and war on crack used bad data to push homophobic and racist ideas. More recent examples — timnuts stochastic parrots is almost a must read now

Data is not a true representation of the world. There are confounders, flaws in data collection methods, flaws in models and even analysts have internalise biased. My with work in healthcare data really drove home the real world implications (and deaths) of bias.
