Unfortunately the U.K. isn’t much better and never has been. And probably worse in many ways. 
You could literally see the outcomes from miles aways; disproportionate deaths of BMEs, achievement gaps, arguments over pubs, etc.
None of it way new or even unexpected.

I’ve only got my experience to really go off, but what I saw when working in the US for a year was super-sketchy...

I’ve never lived in the US, but my BME American friends that have moved here, described discrimination as much subtler and insidious in nature. I think that applies to how we value life here; especially the economical disenfranchised. We have a higher death rate per capita.
