I left my abusive advisor in 2018. I completed my PhD in 2020. I won’t finish paying my attorneys for the legal fees related to the harassment, stalking, and retaliation for 6 more months. This is why people don’t report. Even heavily discounted, this is cost prohibitive.

I’m so sorry. I also get, now that I’ve been through it, how retaliation is pretty much unavoidable and shrinking ourselves to try to avoid it doesn’t work. It’s haunting to always wonder what changes in your career may be due to retaliation and never really knowing.

Reading about the disability discrimination you experience and being characterised as crazy, getting mocking statements made, having your social media conversations reported back. God that literally all happened to me as well. It’s insane how ableism is so common place.

Honestly, I spend so much time asking myself, why did I speak up! Now, I genuinely think if you can survive through it. If your early in your career. Just bear it. Because power imbalance is too great. You can’t win, even when you win, you lose.
