OMG - My startup was all about addressing this inequality. It took soooo much effort getting doctors to understand fundamental characteristic differences in PPG signals due to melanin levels. I had to do so much work trying to convince people this was an issue.

It get's worse. The use of reflectance PPG for continuous blood pressure monitoring which received FDA approval in 2020 (I believe) and PPG based AF monitoring which received FDA approval 2019 also is limited by this same issue. It's a far bigger issue than people realise!

I could probably write multiple papers about this issue. I was literally the CEO and founder of a MedTech startup trying to address inequality within healthcare. My focus was developing ML techniques to extract diagnostic information from PPG and reduce diversity bias.

Scattering as volume fraction of melanin increases, can be follows predictable patterns which we can model - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6412556/ … But when doing more complex analysis we really need demographic data that doesn't exist yet. It's a looming healthcare disaster
