Yes, and it’s becoming almost impossible for students to get on PhD with a 2.1 in my experience. 1st AND a masters seems to be more and more common, which cannot be good for diversity within research.
UGs are inconsistent, it's a silly way to determined suitability to begin with. I cofounded a start-up where I managed a team of scientists, secured grants and clinical trials with major hospitals, developed novel medical AI, etc. I probably would never be accepted on to a PhD

As an ex-VC backed founder. I've found a knowledge, competence, resilience or ability isn't well reflected in UG/PG. I'm less convinced by the value prop of traditional HE or if it makes good researchers. We need to value experience more and re-examine requirements for PhDs.
