Talk to alumni, too. They are not bound by the same power dynamics that bind current students.https://twitter.com/sarahchasins/status/1361781177661747204 …

to counterbalance survivorship bias: if they supervised any students that left the program, try to get in touch with them too

I wish it were easier to find out in those cases, I think it can be hard

I genuinely think the best way is too look at what a supervisors requirements — you can read a lot into a person by what they look for from others. Then how many of their students are from underrepresented / marginalised backgrounds. Finally how many people are similar to you?

If they’re sexist, men wouldn’t have noticed. If they’re racist, white people wouldn’t have noticed. If they’re classist, the middle-class wouldn’t have noticed. If they’re ableist, the able-bodied wouldn’t have noticed. — Look for those like you, that they have supervised

I think that's important, but doesn't tell the full story. The pattern of abuse isn't always clear especially with such a small sample size. Like a sexist and abusive professor might abuse a dude but then later be extra nice to his first woman student to prove he "isn't sexist."

One thing about abuse in general is that abusers are often not abusive to everyone they interact with, even everyone who meets the same set of criteria. Might just be a matter of having supply from a different place in the abuser's life at the time or something similar.

Likewise I think my advisor had a very small sample of women students before me, who for other reasons didn't graduate? But he's a great advisor to me for sure, and I wouldn't generalize from such a small sample. I'd say it's just worth talking to as many alumni as possible.

That’s a good point. I didn’t consider any of that that until you mentioned it.
