This article is gross. I hired a RA who was 3 weeks released from a 10 year prison sentence and I’d do it again. Formerly incarcerated people deserve futures with dignity and opportunity.https://twitter.com/nypost/status/1361129414889725956 …

Seriously. What’s the point of prisons if everyone treats you like a criminal even after you’ve been punished? _ Honestly, academia/universities already have people far more of a safety risks than a the usual poor non-white kid who ended up in prison b/c of a non-violent offence
Agree that academia, like most of society, has safety risks! Just to clarify, the person I hired had committed violent offenses. I was one of their first meetings post-release and I was very happy to hire them.
At the end of the day, you advocated for someone in a difficult position and changed their lives for the better. That alone is worth celebrating. _ Advocating for the marginalised at a personal level is the best thing we can do! It has direct and meaningful impact!
