Another way to look at this is: Latex people think more before they write and the product is higher quality?

FWIW I tried the new-ish latex equation typesetting in Word. It’s soooo cumbersome compared to Latex (or when responding to student question on Piazza mixing text and latex)

It's so much better than it used to be though! Would be interesting to compare word and LaTeX to something a bit more modern like markdown.

I use both regularly. Word is better on a number of dimensions.

Amen. Like many people working on the same manuscript. Latex doesn’t get even close to that. And to me that’s the most critical feature for picking where you write your paper these days. If the leading author wants to then put it into latex to prettify it, I’m fine with that.

Overleaf is as good as Word for collaborative writing - better in some ways.

But don’t you need institutional access or to pay for it? Everybody has word, not every institution pays for overleaf… but it may have improved since I last tried it out
