Tanvir, nobody in any EDI space can have every protected characteristic. Nor is it desirable that they do. We need folks like you who are able to speak authentically about their important experiences and ally with others and help amplify their voices and build their influence.

I am not a woman, or trans, or BAME. But I am gay, single parent, who was educated in a northern comprehensive. I have my areas of expertise, but will also always speak as an ally to others, while making sure to listen & learn from them, and amplify their authentic voices.

Ultimately, progress in one area of EDI, should be leveraged to achieve progress for all. It should not be a zero sum game. We must keep working together - sharing expertise but also valuing and promoting authenticity.

What Tanvir is saying is not about lacking the lived experience in order to work towards EDI, but being excluded from EDI efforts because in some individuals’ eyes certain types of diversity trump others. It’s about being devalued for one’s volunteered contributions in EDI spaces

It’s really striking that harassment & bullying are still rife in so-called EDI spaces. Bullies dressed as diversity champions get to sit behind their protected characteristics & carry on pretending to represent broad minorities. This has really made me rethink my role in EDI too

Agree completely. I have, on occasion, been explicitly told I should not speak about issues aced by women in STEM because i am not a woman. But I will always try my best, partly just as an ally, but partly because some of my lived experience is relevant.

It bothers me when some in EDI perceive themselves as being the most marginalised and ignoring the lived experience of others. Not to say intersectionality doesn’t exist, but it’s not possible to compare marginalised characterises and decide one is more marginalised.

I think I agree with some of what you said. There are clearly some groups who are more marginalised than others. Fixing those types of exclusion needs priority. But the way groups of diverse people work together must absolutely be built on mutual respect and equity.

I should have clarified. I don’t think it’s helpful to compare intersectional marginalised characteristics. I.e disabled BME vs BME woman vs working class BME. I personally think class & disability marginalise significantly. But I don’t think that’s a common perception.
