That’s completely valid. I’m more of the perspective, we need to re-examine who we collectively idolise, and whether we should be to begin with. Individual heroes is a different beast - many have controversial heroes and it’s about how we individually relate to their legacy.

Agree. I would happily get rid of 'collectively' anything. We all have different perspectives (which is a good thing) and can have some people we like in common and some not. Even Mother Theresa is controversial, so I don't think there is a single figure that isn't.

Yup, agreed. I have many controversial heroes, just based on how I relate to their ideas and legacy — Malcolm X. Some national heroes are controversial — in Pakistan, Genghis Khan is a hero. It’s definitely personal. After a while these people turn into myths and stories.

I would definitely still like show this to my daughters one day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1ww1IXRfTA … . Should I mention to them on that occasion that he was a womanizer, maybe a sexist and didn't brush his teeth?

When she’s older she’ll eventually come to her own conclusions either way. I’d probably first introduce her to Maryam Mirzkhani — more relevant, more recent and I personally find her more inspirational and self aware.https://youtu.be/swLWqlKMl5M

The one who's old enough would probably get bored with either. She wants to be a lawyer.

LooooL.

That’s a great career move! — tones of money.
I‘be failed to convince my little sister to become a lawyer; she’s 12.
My persistent pushing toward law hasn’t been successful. Children have their own minds.

I personally like the quote "The Mind Is Not a Vessel That Needs Filling, But Wood That Needs Igniting". So I've been trying exactly that. Why law worked and other things didn't? Who knows. She's dreaming of Cambridge BTW so maybe one day you'll meet there. But it may all change.

The 3 y.o. is fascinated with anatomy though, particularly brains so I still have some hope.

Awesome. Did you get the chance to play with the kids in the snow? I’ve actually just come back from taking my little sister out and building a snowman!

Hahah - Cambridge is a strange place, the law school is very good! My pastoral tutor was lawyer. I’m a fan of UCL; it’s where my sister did her degree and I’ve considered look at PhDs there. The environments much more supportive and research in neuro is exciting!
