I don't disagree, but my position is slightly more nuanced. First, the asshole part if all hearsay. Even that hearsay doesn't accuse him of anything criminal. He's dead and cannot defend himself. We don't know the final balance of the people he encouraged vs. those he discouraged

I suspect that he encouraged many orders of magnitude more people via his books and his (public) persona than he discouraged via some private interactions. I think it's nice to have personal heroes. As we grow up we can accept the fact that these heroes had flaws as anybody else.
