Yes exactly! The sad thing is that we do this to each other. We review our peers' proposals and we set the standards. At some point we collectively decided that the standard should be cruel and that gate keeping is ok.
Gets worse and worse lower down the ladder. Academia is filled w/ people who benefited from privilege and stability. Undergrad and PhD Students have it the worst. I know more disabled / people with health conditions the system has failed than have benefited from it.
