I think it's related to government / university rules about student fees, and that previously both UK and EU students were covered by funders. Applicants from further afield had to pay overseas fees, which now includes those from the EU

Yeah, me too - so much is said about 'Global Britain' but then we're shutting ourselves off from so much talent from across the world

I find it strange the people who makes these decisions benefitted from a free university education - the world was a different place. But it's probably just to manage competition; separate funds for different groups of people. Though there should be more flexibility overall.
