Yes. But he has no convincing argument that we are IO limited.

I think it’s just marketing. Reminds me of Tesla - they’re nowhere close to solving level-5 self driving and are taking a brute-force approach that makes no sense.

That being said I do want neuralink and BCI’s to be a success. Also given my love for Ghost in the Shell; would love to have cybernetic enhancements. (Elon Musk also loves anime).

Sure, I think all of us would love for this to be a reality. The downside of Musk's wildly aspirational claims is that it sets unrealistic expectations and promotes hype cycles. 5 years later Musk moves on to another issue and has no care for the devastation in his wake.

I don't agree. I think it inspires many. We need to cultivate both sides of ourselves, the dreamers and the pragmatists.

To run a successful company - especially a startup. Vision is very important; Musk is able to get people to buy into his vision and which has accelerated advancements. I doubt he will "crack the brain", but selling that dream increases funding and pushes the boundaries.

This tweet has changed the outcome variable. I'm not talking about running a successful company and could care less if Tesla thrives. I'm concerned about what's good for the field and science in general.

It seems that his neuralink project is an Apollo mission of the current young generation that will help people choose their dream job or studying topic It's already much easier to speak about "brain science" to laypeople and convince them to work on/in it

of course, if he spectacularly crashes then that would create neuro-winter but I hope he is too good to not sell even minor breakthrough and to be fair he don't abandon his ideas out of whim

I don’t think if he crashes it’ll change the outcome. Tesla had multiple failures! He’ll just just pivot.
Neuralink is good for science b/c
1)increases public awareness
2)draws VC capital
3)pushes market competition
This all unlocks more opportunities for labs/academics!

It's been discussed after the neuralink demo and it's not clear cut that this is great for the field. Musk makes wild claims about what is novel, while labs that have been working for years on this technology (and have mature/awesome products) are ignored. >

I'm also (still) not convinced that public awareness is great if it's deeply oversold. People (and VCs and grant agencies) only have so much appetite for claims that don't deliver. Musk may just end up briefly eclipsing the long-running efforts in this area. >
