Yeh, the IOP article heavily borrows from PopSci. Really trying to grab the readers attention. But up until prior, I hadn’t even considered the possibility that QM had any role in the brain.
@YildizogluSelin, who has a background in neuroscience, could shed some light.

Plus the question is whether quantum mechanics is actually necessary to explain Neurobiology, similar to how we don't actually need quantum mechanics to explain most of classical mechanics.

I agree. A few papers suggested that phantom limb pain could be explained using potassium ion quantum tunnelling. So maybe in very specific situations it’s relevant. The field is nicely summarises in this paper; so far it’s largely theoretical. https://arxiv.org/pdf/1910.08423.pdf …
