Had the same in Singapore 10 years ago. Harassed for 3 hours, with immigration asking me why I was stopping over in Singapore, rather than going straight to Borneo. They asked me to speak Arabic..because I had Egyptian visas in my passport. Also: “where are you *really* from?”

Yeh, this reminds me of my visit to NYC.
Random search at Heathrow.
And on arrival, I was taken to a room by the TSA and interrogated b/c being British Pakistani was suspicious. 
Loved my time in the USA, hated everything to do with flying.
