Replace academic reference letters with a forecasting platform—referees give their probability that the applicant will get a good degree, conditional on the applicant being admitted. Then, over time, we score referees (and their institutions). Not a new idea, but a good one.

Excellent points. I was mostly thinking of undergraduate admissions, where a “good degree” is less contentious. I still think that this system would be useful for PhD admissions, to replace “top X%” metrics, but not to replace engagement with candidates’ research interests.

However, the reality is that we are swamped with PhD applications, and metrics will continue to be used to aid decisions: I think that the forecasting metric I suggested is fairer and more valid than current approaches.

I don’t think the number applicants is the problem. Competition for YC & EF is far greater than any PhD I’ve seen. Each Partner reviews about 10,000 applications. But their process felt very fair and robust. You always knew where you stood and always had an opportunity.
