This Ph.D. student (at the time) refused to believe that students from ethnic minority backgrounds would have a barrier in seeing themselves as academic careers or scientists because he happened to have a Muslim chemistry teacher. Oh & initiatives for BAME students are racist.
Not surprising right? This is kind of the predominant view in academia overall. A solid 70% of academics I’ve come across struggled to recognises that barriers existed for ethnic minorities. ____ People generally struggle to internalise ideas like privilege.
That’s my experience now, as a student and whilst I was applying. I don’t think this will change, given empathy is a function of exposure and ability to internalise ideas. I don’t take it personally. They’re just unfortunately limited by their ability to perceive reality.
Btw, that’s a really nice way of me saying...
I just don’t think they’re that bright and have just been privileged and lucky.
