the idea that "good ideas get diffused organically" is not always true (I mean most often not true). Real academy is not such a fair tale of ideal Ivory tower much more hierarchical / inequitable (in exposure, promotion etc) than some folks of privilege might believehttps://twitter.com/lawrennd/status/1353337601034481666 …

I don't say this to say pay for sponsored tweets and go nuts (it's often not effective), but I mean to say we must not be so quick to judge those who do!! aren't academics "paying" to attend a conference some form of paid promotion, esp. with public tax $$?

I’ve really appreciated how you’ve been highlighting the structural inequalities within academia that people seem to be missing. _ One point someone raised was b/c of the promotion, people interested but can’t access publications were able to engage with science.

If the peer review and community is robust it won’t make a difference. But I think it’ll influence the direction of research. A papers success relies on prestige rather than merit. Nobody publishes negative results. Reproducibility is rare, so many findings end up false.

I think the focus needs to be how do we ensure promotional tweets, marketing, hype and other variables don’t impact the direction of science. How do we make sure that it’s really the work that stands on it’s own? We need a more robust system.
