I know many things about ML research is very weird these days, and companies routinely pay to get their job postings in front of candidates.
But seeing actual promoted Tweets (i.e. paid-for ads) from @MSFTResearch advertising papers their researchers wrote is still messed up.

It seems like a rational decision to me. The company spends a large amount of money to produce the research and it makes sense to spend a smaller amount to promote it.

It’s rational if your approach to research is marketing. If your approach to research is to allow ideas to stand on their merits then it’s an error. So it really is about whether you want your career to be in science or marketing.

So I completely agree, but.... How much of academia is marketing. Giving talks, your supervisor mentioning your work in their talk, self-referencing, etc... In saying that, paid twitter ads are still horrible

It crosses a line when it's paid promotion. What would you think if my re-tweets of a paper were 'paid for'. Or if Talking Machines took payment to interview particular researchers (we do get offered). I think there's a very clear line.

Some academics do over-promote their own/students work. But it does damage their personal reputation. So they pay for their marketing by undermining their own credibility. It's annoying but in long term I think its self correcting.

It’s concerning, especially because it will normalise it. Research progress could begin to heavily rely on paid marketing.
