Like he said, 'research matters even more than grades' . Another way to make up for bad undergrad grades is get good grades in MS . That also provides additional opportunity for research.

Work as a research assistant, build a startup, work in a start-up, climb corporate ladder. Grades are a bad indicator of competence in research, but how good you are at sitting exams. Anyone in industry knows that. But an MS would tick the box. The system’s broken though.

Shit at exams? - focus on industry experience. Had setback? - focus on health. Then contact PIs, be honest. If they don’t understand they’re not worth your time. Look for people like you, but further in their careers. Contact them. Get their advise. There’s multiple paths.
