Good thread on what grad admissions committees look for at MIT. Caveats: different profs (and univs) look at different things, so this doesn't generalize beyond MIT. For example, I don't consider grades at all, especially for international applicants.https://twitter.com/fadeladib/status/1353020072885940224 …

The lack of contextual applications has always bothered me. I’m from a working class background. When I arrived at Cambridge it hit me how trajectory was defined by A) Stability B) Privilege I know so many people who could have been amazing scientist if they had support.

Definitely agreed. Unfortunately, I don't know many good ways to fix this. The one good way I know is mentoring students from under represented backgrounds. This is why internships like the one at CMU are so important!

Sounds like an amazing opportunity. Wish I knew about it during my undergrad. I think contextual applications and having an integrated system where applications are shared amongst PIs across labs and unis, so individuals are placed into supportive labs is the way forwards.

There needs to be a collective integrated approach. We need to do some restructuring and rethinking. Recontextualising what are opportunities and achievements? What was the context? Is it impressive given the circumstances or expected? Solvable, just there isn’t an incentive
