There has been a lot of recent discussion about ubi for labs. But at the moment we have negative ubi, paying for publishing, training, conferences, expensive for profit hardware and software. Bringing these costs down, which we can readily do is an important step for fairness.

Why is fairness the important measure? I can't say it's not important, it surely is, but for me something even more basic and more important is plain output The feeling is that the average scientist is not very productive, and that "the system" is at least partially responsible
Agree with Brad, a fair system ensures you have a diverse pool, which leads to diversity of though and innovation. A lack of diversity will be less innovative which is overall bad for science. Output isn’t a great measure, quality of output is more important.

Just to clarify, by output I don't mean "number papers written" or "number of experiments performed", but rather something more tangible and waaay downstream like to "more flying cars" or "cheaper energy" or "faster computers" Eventually science has tangible benefits to humanity
