differences in quality of training is all to do with what we reward for PIs and students: if we reward better training (beyond how many students they graduated), PIs will do a better job regardless of number of students in the lab. Social aspects can be achieved at the dept!

also, PIs are not trained in training others, that’s another fundamental issue! So we have to the burn the structure down
also, I’m curious to learn, when you engage in depth in debates like this, how often do you come out depressed?

The thing that makes me not depressed is that we are having an honest substantial debate. We are surely all wrong. But looking at problems from many angles always helps.

yes -- have we progressed from "having an honest debate" to implementing any of the ideas coming out? we might have made tiny progress in publication mechanisms (with
#openaccess etc), but nothing on eval metrics, funding allocation and other incentives?https://twitter.com/Raamana_/status/1345043417290715139?s=20 …Future Distinguished Emeritus Prof Pradeep Reddy 😎 dodał/a,

that issue of politics is widely acknowledged, but why aren't people doing anything about it? is it possible because:https://twitter.com/Raamana_/status/1334847540802555907?s=20 …

Future Distinguished Emeritus Prof Pradeep Reddy 😎 @Raamana_Here is what I’m trying to say!! The thoughtless shit I’m having to deal with while calling for protest-decline of reviewing & editing and esp. the idea of shaming those ACTIVELY sustaining a toxic enterprise, makes it clear to me many academics aren’t ready to be “unplugged”! pic.twitter.com/KhB0RYBLMFPokaż ten wątek2 odpowiedzi 0 podanych dalej 0 polubionych -

Because it is often unclear how to improve the system?

no i don't think so. Many of us know what's better (not running a toxic lab, seeking high IF journals at any cost, exploiting trainees for their own careerist goals etc), they are not willing to pay the [personal] cost to achieve it the morpheus quote is perfect in this context!

None of the examples are clearly system. What is system is how to attach punishments to these professor failings. And that is advancing. Too slowly. But it is. But systems of punishments are complicated.

Are there many organised campaign groups within academia protesting for change? We’ve had lecturers strike in the U.K., there’s been a lot of successful negotiations. You’re right; there needs to be clear goals and it must be well organised.https://www.theguardian.com/education/2019/nov/07/university-staff-dont-want-to-strike-for-fair-pensions-and-pay-but-were-being-forced-to …
