How come many of the same people who complain about elitism in science, insane profit making in scientific publishing, and perverseness of impact factors also proudly celebrate BIG papers in Nature & Co? 
This pride is why the system is so hard to change...
The whole journal systems runs on by commodifying prestige. I would argue renowned and prestigious academics/universities have enough brand power to challenge the modern publishing system; especially if they formed a consortium. It baffles me how academia ended up trapped.

They are challenging it. The Netherlands, Germany, the state of California.. all have been successful at pushing back on the publishing industry. How we ended up trapped? Prestige is deeply rooted in human psyche and it affects all human endeavours.

That’s interesting. What are they called? I’m a huge fan of arxiv and sci-hub. (Of course for legal reasons I have never used Sci-Hub and do not at all condone the use of Sci-Hub to freely access academic papers. In fact I’ve never heard of them).
