Being home for the holidays always brings nostalgia and perspective. We were so poor growing up, I distinctly remember feeling *stressed* as a 5 yr old... to the point where it made my scalp hurt (the only way I can describe the pain is if hair falling out in masses is painful).

I have some of the exact same memories growing up in the U.K. It’s crazy how some of the most developed nations in the world treated their poorest people. I remember being a child and so poor, that at time my parents would struggle to put food on the table.

I didn’t make the connection with mental health. Many working class and POC communities shunned mental health as a weakness. Ironically we didn’t realise many of us were depressed. I remember being surrounded by people with severe mental illnesses being abounded on the streets.
