This is such an important conversation to have. I hope top schools are considering ways to control the ever rising standards expected of incoming PhD students. If nothing is done, I think working as RAs pre-PhD will become a norm. Which would be kinda sad IMO

Yes, we need to work hard to diversify cohorts. But be realistic that there are tens of schools with amazing faculty. Not everyone has to go to a top4 (or top10) school. No matter what policy we adopt, we can't give all 3000+ applicants one of, say, 120 spots.
There’s probably a lot that could already be done to diversity the cohort. Diversifying a cohort and supply/demand issues are very different discussions. Having a contextual admissions policy addresses the issue of diversity.

A student from a disadvantaged background would benefit far more at a prestigious school, than someone born into privilege. I think of it as who would benefit more. As it leads to more long term changes in the world and address inequality at a personal level that we control.

Yes agree completely. And working actively to improve things on that end locally. All I was saying above is that the overall competitiveness problem will not go away.
