To the young authors who are putting Gmail addresses in their scientific papers, with the idea that their academic address is fleeting: are you sure? Google is a private company. Are you sure it will not ring like Microsoft or IBM 10 years from now? Might you have moved on?

twitter handle is another options. Some outlets now allow for that. More importantly perhaps, make sure ORCID is there?

Hmm, another for-profit, apparently-free company... And in 5-10 years it will probably ring like MySpace or AOL. Or indeed Facebook.

Google has been around for 22 years and is the 5th largest company in the world. Frankly, they’re the new GoldmanSachs. I wouldn’t be surprised if they outlived me. Universities these days treat people like they’re for-profit businesses anyway. What difference does it make?

I should note, UCL does give students their email addresses for life - even when they become alumni. Most other universities don’t. Props, where props is due.
