Every department has abusive labs that many grad students leave. My question: what accountability measures are in place in your dept to address these issues from the student or faculty side?

What I don’t want to hear is a “natural selection” or “whisper network” that students use to know who the “bad ones are”. That unspoken method takes social capital and puts other students at risk

Are faculty prevented from taking more students? Are they required to take mentorship training? Any other accountability mechanisms?

Why is there such a focus on grad students and not academia generally? I was a victim of abuse during my BA and so were many of my friends. There’s so much solidarity with grad students, but literally none when you’re an undergrad and your whole future rests on your degree.

I’m on the Graduate Studies Committee for my dept and this is a huge discussion right now for our grad students. I totally agree these accountability measures should extend to other career stages.

This needs to spearheaded by academics that have experienced abuse / have a history of speaking out against injustice internally. You can’t expect change for the establishment. If a white man who’s never experienced abuse is heading up inquiries can you trust their decision.
