Every department has abusive labs that many grad students leave. My question: what accountability measures are in place in your dept to address these issues from the student or faculty side?

I’m on the Graduate Studies Committee for my dept and this is a huge discussion right now for our grad students. I totally agree these accountability measures should extend to other career stages.
The burden of proof is always on the victim, but most abuse is behind closed doors and is difficult to prove. Think of it in a similar vein as police brutality. Even if one academic is abusing their power, there is no incentive to speak out.
