Agreed. Meritocracy has always been a self congratulatory joke people tell one another to make them feel like they live in a “fair system” or their achievements aren’t just a function of their socioeconomics.
+ romanticize the few exceptions to justify not changing the system and to sleep well at night because "look that person made it you just have to work hard enough and BELIEVE".
