[been helping ppl w/ SOPs] and see a common pattern of starting with a generally-known anecdote about a FAANG company. I recommend ppl edit this out -- Uni folks already know this -- so many SOPs to read. Thoughts?

Yes. Statement of purpose (SOP) ~= personal statement in the USA. Different universities may call this different things.
