If a PhD doesn't prep you to manage engineers in a well-funded tech company, how does it prep you to start your own lab from scratch, "hire" grad students, run a team, etc? Having a PhD gives a person more social capital and stronger signalling. There’s a few competing incentive. I don’t think the answer is simple. Length of time at a company, etc. But it would be cool to see actually what employers and founders think.
