Apple explicitly states on their website that their O2 stats are not for medical use. All smartphones are capable of r-PPG, including older apple watches, though it was disabled by the FDA. But in 2019, Maximilian released the first FDA approved PPG/ECG mobile biosensor module.
Of course using red and IR LEDs allows for deeper penetration and thus more accurate results for wrist mounted devices. This is because green light is more readily absorbed by melanin in the skin.
