Alright, people who are more familiar with cars than me, do I go for a Honda Civic or Mazda 3? I just want something reliable and cheap.

That's the smart call anyways. There's almost no reason to buy new as it loses a decent bit of its value when your drive it off the lot
-
Warranties, safety features, and compatability with new technology. All good reasons to buy new. no warrant will treat u as good as manufact

If you're gonna go with Used try to get a "one owner" car and check the carfax for accidents. No car is ever 100% if they had a big accident

Bought my first "newish" car last year when I got a certified preowned Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Very happy, but my body needs extra space
-
In that, it is a good sized car and I needed it for my large body frame. Not expensive and has been pretty reliable

Try to get a two year old car then. It has already lost the bigger part of its value so it cheap and won't lose that much. Also almost new
