i do that too! but not when im focused persay, more when im thinking (like planning my next move in a turn based game)

I do this all the time w the left shift key! I naturally have my left hand fingers sitting on shift (pinky), a, w, d, spacebar (thumb)

Do you use Caps Lock? I have it remapped with Insert but it could be anything. I used SharpKeys but there are other tools as well. I did some other swaps as well, like remapping Windows to Right Control (it's been extremely useful in WoW) and the menu/application key to Windows.

It's the scroll wheel for me! And just like your check at the end I usually have to make sure I switch back to the right weapon

I’ve been watching SC2 pro Polt stream TFT and he’s always clicking something somewhere on the board even if it doesn’t do anything. It’s fascinating to watch!

To shed some light onto this, there's a sort of rythym you get into as the game advances and certain cycles of commands you give at specific intervals (i.e. build marines every 17s). "spamming" keys needlessly gets you into that flow.
