I just saw last night that Witcher 3 has an option to make monsters scale up to you. Thought that was cool. This is a hard problem to solve as what you see as a punishment here, others see as a reward.
This is becoming less and less of a problem but I really wish games would stop punishing you for doing side-content by outlevelling the main content and trivializing it.

Side-content reducing difficulty is fine so the option is a good solution. I like clearing areas before moving on and by the time I do that I'm 6 levels ahead and the next area gives me no rewards.

Nah, Borderlands 3. I'm consistently 5+ levels above the main story so there isn't any challenge unless I stop doing the side stuff which I don't want to randomly not do any more.
