"Food tastes better when it's free." How do you interpret this statement? (even if you don't agree with it) 1: All free food tastes better than anything you had to procure/pay for. 2: When comparing the free food to the costly version of the same food, free tastes better.

Are you settling an argument with someone? I don't think I've ever heard someone suggest the first, but I've heard this sentiment (usually semi-seriously) often, to mean the second.
