Shoutout to @princessalaafia for reminding us that it’s okay to outgrow our teachers and let them go I still remember her asking if the covers of my UK proofs could be stripped and reprinted because she was so adamant that her name not appear *anywhere* on my work.

Which, honestly, sounds like the kind of energy I’d bring for someone I don’t fuck with. Don’t put my name anywhere on your shit, don’t use it for clout or to help readers find your work, sever any ties we have. Fair enough, but at the time, it did *feel* retaliatory.

I had just disclosed that I wasn’t a woman, I had been vocal online against her transphobia, my debut had just been published, etc etc. None of her reaction was surprising if you know older cishet Nigerian women who consider themselves your senior aka an authority over you.
