I let it move as fiction because it needed that mask as my debut, you know? I don’t believe it would have been published as nonfiction because it would have required acknowledging that indigenous realities aren’t myths.

Even that ~5% is questionable, because as someone once pointed out, memoir has always included reconstructed memories that aren’t viewed as fictional. E.g. Frank McCourt fully writing dialogue he couldn’t possibly remember from when he was a child in Angela’s Ashes.

But the people it was written for always knew it wasn’t fictional, so the mask was irrelevant. We know what is real, down to our bones and spirit, we always have.
