Look, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—the worst part of writing books is how often you have to fight to protect the integrity of the work, over and over, an endless amount of times.
This work is a whole spirit vocation thing, so I’m literally not allowed to sit by and let shit that affects the work negatively go untouched. I can feel when I’m being told to hold my center, no matter the cost, and there is always a cost.
It’s why I say I’m loyal to nothing and no one in this industry except the work. I know what Oga God embodied me to do, you get? Disobedience is not an option, so no matter where my career climbs to, whatever I have to set on fire, I will still set on fire.
It doesn’t matter what it risks. It doesn’t matter if it ‘jeopardizes’ my professional relationships, my book sales, my likability, whatever. I’ll be that difficult Black bitch saying too much on social media all day, as long as the work is executed without compromise.
If you’re looking for someone to stay in line, not point out true things, play the grateful nigga, swallow harm silently, or allow their work to be diluted for mainstream appeal, then you haven’t been paying attention or reading my books and you shouldn’t be working with me.
I’m not a machete wielding entity, but understand that all I have to do as a weapon is hold my ground, immovable within a ring of fire, and speak the truth from there. You cannot move me because Oga God told me not to move, therefore I cannot be moved.
These books will exist by fire or by force, all seventeen plus of them, and whatever I have to do or become to protect the work? So be it. I’m not here to serve a bottom line. My job is to serve Oga God by serving the people who this work is for. That’s it. We move.
It’s exhausting, isn’t it? But you have to stay strong and keep on fighting.
I wasn’t prepared for the resulting exhaustion of this when I was manuscripting.
It’s the only thing that has made me seriously consider quitting this job.
