I’m forever grateful that Binya connected me to them. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered you apparently can’t query there? So his introduction meant more than I even realized at the time.

I will say that in the last years, I withdrew from my relationship with Binya because he was espousing harmful views I couldn’t support. Just want to hold space for that because I know people were harmed and that’s important to recognize.

When it comes to agents, it’s a crucial step in this industry, especially for African writers. I could’ve passed through that workshop & had a different career trajectory without that introduction to Wylie.

Freshwater went out bare weeks after I signed with Wylie, and to be honest, having an agent helped me drop out of my toxic MFA program because I knew my work would be safe. We sold FW within the year and the rest is, well, epic.

And look, my first agents were genuinely wonderful & amazingly supportive, it’s just that they were smaller & I needed a behemoth. People have told me their gripes with Wylie and I’m like oh yes, they are absolutely sharks. So am I, though.
