Those who know, recognize it immediately, which is perfect because they're who I wrote it for. The other responses? Whew! I've learned so much about readers through this, like which centers people are moving from.
I'm always hella excited for other Nigerians to read my work, and the result is often a fascinating collision of things, Christianity and transphobia among them, because of the content and because of who I am publicly.
The number of people who see my actual existence as a gimmick to make money from white people is...not that surprising. I can't relate because my center has nothing to do with humans, let alone whiteness.
There's also the whole thing of how our African writers engaging with ontology or philosophy in their work must all be cis men, whose prose can be as opaque as they like because intellectuals, but are they seen as doing the most?
