With THE DEATH OF VIVEK OJI, I’ve known from the start what the fight is going to be. I won’t go into it in detail because spoilers, but I will say that you should read the book yourself because the attempts to warp its center is going to be a whole fucking thing.

In general, there will be a few main issues. One of them is the desire to frame LGBTQ characters as repressed & suffering because it fits a particular annoying Western narrative around coming out. You are X and unhappy until you announce it and then voila! You live as X.

This is not how shit actually works. Y’all want everything to be linear and binary, but it’s not. Assuming that an LGBTQ character’s struggle is immediately linked to their gender or sexuality is reductive and a poor reading.

With Vivek, specifically, I will say that his major issue in the book is a spiritual one based in fictionalized Igbo ontology. Other than that, this nigga is at peace and figuring his shit out like every other human being.
